The Canadian Comedy Awards are hitting the road, like the Juno and Gemini awards before them.

The annual awards, which honour comedic excellence in film, TV and live performances, are to be staged in Regina in 2008, Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert announced on Monday.

The awards started out in Toronto and have been held since 2003 in London, Ont.

The ceremony is preceded by a five-day comedy festival that brings film, stand-up and skits to local performance venues.

This year, 20 awards will be presented after a comedy festival Oct. 9-13 in London.

About 18,000 members of the performers unions ACTRA and Equity, the directors and writers guilds, and the Comedy Association vote on the awards.

The 9th annual Canadian Comedy Awards will be presented in 2008 in the province that is home to two successful TV series currently — Little Mosque on the Prairie and Corner Gas.

Organizers of the Juno awards, for Canadian music, were the first to start changing the venue annually — and the process has helped rejuvenate the ceremony, including by drawing in the local community.

The Junos were staged in Saskatoon in March and the Geminis, which held its ceremony in Vancouver in 2006, will head to Regina in October.
