A former northern Saskatchewan MP who resigned earlier this year has taken a job with uranium giant Cameco Corp.
Gary Merasty had held the seat of Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River for the Liberals since the January 2006 election, but said in July he was stepping down to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.
Merasty, 42, is now the Saskatoon-based company's vice-president of corporate social responsibility.
On Wednesday, the chief electoral officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand, declared that the seat is officially vacant. With Merasty's departure, Wascana MP Ralph Goodale is now Saskatchewan's lone Liberal. The other 12 MPs are Conservatives.
A byelection must be called in the northern riding within six months. The earliest possible date for a byelection is Oct. 22.
