The mother of a baby found in a toilet in a Wal-Mart store earlier this year has been charged with child abandonment, Prince Albert city police say.

The woman, 21, whom police have not named, is scheduled to appear in court in Prince Albert on Sept. 13.

After the baby boy was discovered by a store employee in a washroom stall on May 21, the case made headlines across Canada. Store video showed a young woman dressed in a heavy coat entering the store and leaving a few minutes later.

The child was taken to Victoria Hospital in serious condition, but was later released and placed in the care of the Lac La Ronge Indian Child and Family Services agency.

The mother came forward several days after the baby was found, following a public appeal by police.

Under the Criminal Code, the charge of abandonment applies to a person who "unlawfully abandons or exposes a child who is under the age of 10 years, so that its life is or is likely to be endangered, or its health is or is likely to be permanently injured."

According to Prince Albert police, the charge was laid at the direction of the Crown prosecutor's office in Regina. Senior Crown prosecutor Dean Sinclair declined to comment on the case, saying it's before the courts.
