A semi-truck carrying uranium oxide went into a ditch on a busy Saskatchewan highway on the weekend, following a two-vehicle accident that left two people injured.

The southbound semi-truck struck the eastbound car and went into a ditch near Kenaston, at the intersection of Highways 11 and 15, at around 10:30 a.m. CT Saturday.

The driver of that car and the driver of the semi-truck were taken to hospital. The extent of their injuries wasn't available.

The uranium oxide did not leak from the truck and there was no risk to public safety, the RCMP said.

A hazardous materials company was called to help remove the truck from the scene.

Traffic on the highway that links Saskatoon and Regina was blocked for a while, the RCMP said.

They didn't say if charges were being considered.

Uranium oxide is used to make fuel for nuclear reactors.

Kenaston is about 80 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon.
