Police in Prince Albert are looking for the mother of a newborn baby abandoned in the local Wal-Mart washroom on Monday.

Staff at the store found the baby boy in a washroom stall after 5 p.m., police say.

The infant was rushed to a Saskatoon hospital where he is in serious but stable condition and receiving treatment.

Police are concerned the mother may also need medical help but is too afraid to step forward.

Parkland ambulance head Lyle Karashiuk says they are still trying to figure out what happened after dealing with the situation Monday.

"I would suspect that the mother had the delivery occur right in the washroom," Karashiuk told CBC News Tuesday.

"We don't believe that the mother, though this is unconfirmed, delivered the baby outside of the facility, let's say in her car or a neighbouring residence, and brought it to the Wal-Mart store."

Young mothers shopping at the Prince Albert Wal-Mart Tuesday were puzzled but sympathetic to the unknown mother.

"I can't believe she'd do that," said Roxanne Scarlett, a 17-year-old mother of two small babies. "I don't hate her or anything. I can understand. She must have been scared. But she needs to go see her baby, regardless of whether or not she wants it."

Tiffany Wilson, 27, also a mother of two, says she feels sorry for the woman.

"I think she must have been pretty desperate," Wilson said. [It] must have been a pretty desperate situation to do that."

Police have not said whether they will charge the newborn's mother if they do track her down.
