Police investigators and dog teams searched a Saskatoon neighbourhood for clues on Saturday after a newborn girl was found abandoned on a doorstep in –21 weather.
The baby — estimated to have been born only an hour earlier — was found wrapped in a towel and a sleeping bag shortly after 10 a.m. on the back step of private home in a middle-class Saskatoon neighbourhood.
"It's one of those things that make you shake your head and wonder just what's going on," said Staff Sgt. Dick Melnychuk.
"One of the homeowners just happened to be going out their back door to start a vehicle and they came upon the child."
Melnychuk said the infant probably would have died if she hadn't been found soon after she was left on the step.
She was taken to hospital, where she seems to be in good condition. She was described as a healthy, full-term baby.
Police officers were canvassing the neighbours to see if anyone could provide information on the girl.
A dog team was also trying to track where the girl came from.
