A Yorkton, Sask., man on trial for the murder of his daughter's boyfriend was upset because of her addiction to drugs, court heard Wednesday.

Kim Joseph Walker, 50, is accused of killing James Hayward on March 17, 2003.

Jurors at the first-degree murder trial have heard that the dead man was a known drug user.

Cpl. Catherine Shepherd of the RCMP testified that the family came to see her four days before the shooting.

Shepherd said the family had received an anonymous letter indicating Kim Walker's daughter Jadah was addicted to morphine and slowly killing herself.

Jadah Walker was committed to a psychiatric unit for three days.

On the day she got out, friends took her to her boyfriend's house.

According to testimony from Jessica Wonitowy, a friend of Jadah's who witnessed the shooting that resulted in the murder charge, Kim Walker went into the house and ordered his daughter to leave.

When Jadah Walker did not do that, her father pulled out a pistol and fired a number of shots at Hayward, Wonitowy said. Several bullets were later taken out of Hayward's body in a post-mortem examination, court also heard.

The Queen's Bench trial began Tuesday and is expected to run two weeks.
