The work of Saskatoon police investigating child pornography on the internet has contributed to the arrest of an Arizona man.

Robert Kuenzli of Phoenix is facing numerous charges of possessing and receiving child pornography following an investigation by Saskatoon and Arizona police.

An Arizona grand jury indicted Kuenzli after police allegedly found child pornography on his home computer Nov. 3.

Before the arrest, a Saskatoon police constable who was posing as a pornographer had allegedly contacted Kuenzli online, the Saskatoon police service said Monday.

Saskatoon police say they regularly check online chat rooms and other sites known to be used by pedophiles.

It was during one of these checks, in September, that police investigators allegedly made contact with Kuenzli.

Growing co-operation among police forces internationally is becoming the norm when it comes to child pornography, said Wyn Hornbuckle, spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office in Arizona.

"I think everyone shares a concern for the safety of children and to prevent their exploitation and to try to reach these networks that are operating in the shadows of the internet," he said.

This is the third time in as many months Saskatoon police have been involved in arrests made in alleged international child pornography cases.

If convicted under U.S. federal statutes, Kuenzli could face up to 30 years in a federal prison and face a fine of up to half a million dollars.

His trial is expected to begin next year.
