The Saskatchewan government is dealing with another case of financial irregularities, this time involving up to $18,500 from a trust fund for jail inmates.
The Department of Corrections and Public Safety has referred the case to police for investigation, the government said Thursday in a news release.
One employee was fired after the financial irregularities were discovered. The amount under investigation is just more than $1,000, but the total could be as high as $18,500, the release said.
A manager raised concerns about the financial irregularities last week.
Kevin Yates, minister of corrections and public safety, was meeting with reporters to discuss the case Thursday morning. However, few details will be released because it is under police investigation, the government said.
It is one of a series of cases of financial irregularities the province has been grappling with over the past year.
Earlier this month, former welfare payment administrator Evelyn Hynes, 56, was sentenced to four years in prison. She pleaded guilty to defrauding the Saskatchewan government after more than $1 million went missing from the department where she worked.
