Suspect in RCMP killings turns himself in

The man wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of two RCMP officers, Curtis Alfred Dagenais, surrendered to police in Spiritwood, Sask., on Tuesday.
"He has been taken into custody without incident," RCMP Assistant Commissioner Darrell McFadyen said.
Dagenais, 41, was being sought on warrants alleging two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

He will now be charged with those crimes, an RCMP spokesperson told a media briefing in Regina. Dagenais turned himself in at 4 p.m. local time.
He is expected to appear in court in North Battleford on Wednesday.
Const. Marc Bourdages, 26, and Const. Robin Cameron, 29, died July 16 after they were shot on July 7 near the farming community of Mildred, about 140 kilometres west of Prince Albert.
RCMP Sgt. Brian Jones said the Mounties were pleased that Dagenais had turned himself in.
"The objective that we have been striving for since Friday night — his safe arrest, safe surrender — has been effected. And that was the objective of everyone involved, and that has been met, so there's certainly a sense of relief."
RCMP had initially launched an extensive hunt for the suspect in the rough country around Spiritwood, but it was not successful and they later scaled it back.
Dagenais was treated in hospital for a minor injury, and is in custody in Spiritwood.
Mom asked Dagenais to surrender
Elsie Dagenais, the suspect's mother, had issued a public plea for her son to turn himself in to police.
Dagenais surrendered at the Spiritwood RCMP detachment with friends Rosanne and Armend Smith, the Canadian Press reported.
"We just talked and he decided to give himself up and thank God he did," Rosanne Smith told CP.
Howard Cameron, Robin's father, said the surrender will help the family start to heal. He was especially pleased it happened before Robin Cameron's funeral, set for Friday.
Bourdages, who was originally from Saint-Eustache, Que., left behind his wife, who is also an RCMP officer at the Spiritwood detachment, and their nine-month-old boy.
Cameron, a member of the Beardy's Okemasis First Nation north of Saskatoon, was a single mother who left behind an 11-year-old daughter.
