People who travel on Saskatchewan government buses will be paying more in the new year.

Saskatchewan Transporation Company is hiking its fares by an average of 4.56 per cent beginning on Jan. 3, 2013.

That's about $1.45 a ticket, based on an average one-way trip of 188 kilometres, the bus company says.

Currently a return trip from Saskatoon to Prince Albert for a non-senior adult costs $51.10 plus tax. With a 4.56 per cent increase applied, it would cost $53.40 plus tax.

STC says the increase will help the company cover some of its increased costs. It'll be the Crown corporation's second fare increase in less than a year. On April 1, STC raised fares 4.76 per cent.
