Overloaded hospitals in Regina have forced the local health authority to cancel a number of procedures, officials announced Tuesday.

The Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region said staff are busy with trauma cases and emergency room patients.

As a result, some elective procedures are being put off. The region said affected patients will be notified by phone.

Efforts would also be made to reschedule cancelled appointments.

Michael Rodenbach, the chief operating officer for the region, said Tuesday that the situation has persisted for about a month.

He said some patients have been forced into corridors.

"In an extreme situation like we're facing today, we will have some patients on inpatient units who are in the hallway," Rodenbach said, adding it was not an ideal set up.
