Snowmobiler killed in crash near gold mine
A man is dead following a snowmobile crash near an abandoned gold mine in northern Saskatchewan.
Donald "Dino" Bird, 39, died Saturday night near Stanley Mission, the RCMP said.
Bird was heading home with friends following a fishing expedition on Sulphide Lake.
The group was traveling down a trail leading to an abandoned gold mine when Bird's machine sped up and drove through a chained gate blocking the entrance to the mine.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police issued a news release about the crash on Tuesday.
Alcohol may have been a factor, the RCMP said.
Stanley Mission is 80 kilometres northeast of La Ronge.
