The City of Saskatoon's new art gallery is one step closer to reality, after council voted unanimously in favour of the project Tuesday night.

Councillors have agreed to put construction of the gallery out to tender.

Members of the board of the Art Gallery of Saskatchewan said they would like to see construction start by the new year.

The gallery has to be completed by 2015 or else a $30-million grant from the federal government can no longer be used.

The gallery, including its underground parkade, will cost about $84-million, with most of the money coming from taxpayers.

Donors have raised $20-million for construction so far and hope to raise even more.
