The dot-xxx Internet domain name was created this year to host websites with adult content, but the City of Saskatoon and other cities in Saskatchewan are now buying some of these names in an effort to protect their images.

The City of Saskatoon has purchased six x-rated domain names, such as Saskatoon.xxx, at a cost of a little less than $1,000 for two years.

"We were concerned about our public image, about the profile we have, and also for the citizens of Saskatoon," said  Kevin Peacock with the City of Saskatoon.  "Really quite unhappy about the fact that somebody could actually have a porn site when people think they are coming to the city to do business."

The .xxx suffix is the adult version of .com.

The City is worried that so called "domain squatters" will buy the names of frequently searched City departments and redirect users to pornography sites.

They can also try to sell the address back to the City at a higher price.

"We know exactly where it could go in the future," said Peacock. "We wanted to make sure we addressed it in a proactive manner rather than trying to deal with it after the fact."

The City of Regina is also planning to purchase domain names like Regina.xxx — and perhaps avoid some jokes in the process.

"It's our name, but it's general protection of our digital brand as well," said  Philippe Leclerc with the City of Regina. "Our name just adds a little bit more complexity to it and perhaps a little bit more intention to it."
