Rentalsman ruling on evictions late for some in Regina apt.
The Saskatchewan Rentalsman has ruled that planned renovations to a Regina apartment should not have led to tenants being evicted, a finding that is a bit late for some.
In December, residents of the Viva apartments on Rae Street in the city's Cathedral neighbourhood were told to move out by the end of January 2014.
The Rentalsman, however, has ruled it is not necessary to evict the tenants in order to carry out the renovations.
But Peter Gilmer, of the Regina Anti-Poverty Ministry, said many of the residents have already left.
"Obviously a lot of people felt that they just could not take the chance of being without a place," Gilmer told CBC News Thursday. "So, many feel like they've been forced out."
According to Gilmer, some of the tenants are now paying considerably more for rent in their new places.
