In a move to lower taxi rates for disabled people, Regina City Council has approved changes to the base rates for all cab rides.
The base rate, for all taxi pick-ups is now $4. That is up from $3.80 for a regular taxi ride and down from $7 for a handicap accessible cab.
The move to a single base rate was passed by council at a meeting Thursday night, and was in response to criticism from the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, which noted it was not fair to impose two rates and asked the city to impose rate equity.
Advocates for disabled people expressed support for the change.
