The cost of being buried in Regina is going up, with higher cemetery fees coming in 2014 and 2015.

Regina city council is set to vote tonight on a bylaw to boost fees by 5 per cent on Jan. 1 and another 5 per cent a year later.

The City of Regina operates two cemeteries — Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery and Regina Cemetery.

Currently, a standard burial plot costs $1,290. That will go up $65 in 2014 and another $70 in 2015.

The fee for burying a standard casket will go from the current $890 to $935 in 2014 and $985 in 2015.

The city says it needs higher fees to cover increasing operating expenses, infrastructure repairs and other upgrades.

The city fees are in line with what is charged by other Saskatchewan and Western Canadian communities, the city says.
