Regina police are warning people to be aware of their surroundings following a sexual assault downtown.

It happened just before 1 a.m. CST on Sunday, Regina police said.

A woman said she was walking down Victoria Avenue near McIntyre Street when she went past a man and then was pulled to the ground, held down and sexually assaulted.

She couldn't break free, but her cries for help alerted three men who were nearby. They called police and went to help her.

The suspect ran south on McIntyre Street.

He's described as about 25 years old, five-foot-seven to five-foot-10 in height, with a dark complexion, short black hair and a heavy build.

He was wearing dark, baggy jeans and a dark t-shirt with writing on the front.

The victim was taken to hospital.
