RCMP have charged a Pelican Narrows, Sask., man over a house fire that claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl.

The body of Denasia Sewap-Highway was found in the ruins of a Pelican Narrows house following the Sept. 24 fire.

The little girl had been staying with her great-grandparents, who survived the blaze. Family say Sewap-Highway originally escaped the fire, however, she thought her great-grandfather was still inside and went back in to look for him.

A 19-year-old Pelican Narrows man has been charged with arson and criminal negligence causing death.

He appeared in Prince Albert provincial court on Oct. 4.
