A Saskatoon woman is hoping to collect unwanted sewing machines in Canada and ship them to women in India.

Jody Cason says she got the idea during a visit to India.

Cason hired a woman to sew some garments and was very impressed.

"She did this work so beautifully," Cason said. "And with such energy.  And she inspired me."

Cason said she came to believe that, with a little help, more women could become self-employed instead of working in garment factories.

She submitted her project concept to a contest, sponsored by American Express, and has progressed to become a finalist.

If she wins, Cason will receive $10,0000 and help from philanthropist Craig Kielburger to launch her project.
