A man from the Piapot First Nation is dead after being run over by his own vehicle late Monday night.

At about 11:10 p.m. CST police responded to a report of a man lying on the shoulder of Highway 16, about a kilometre east of Denholm, Sask.

When officers got to the scene, the 56-year-old was already dead. The vehicle he was driving was found a short distance away in a ditch.

An RCMP investigation determined that the man had pulled over on the side of the road and had gotten out of the vehicle while it was in gear, or that it may have slipped into drive after he got out.

The vehicle then rolled forward, hitting the man. His name has not been released.

Police continue to investigate, but say foul play is not suspected.

Denholm is located about 24 kilometres southeast of North Battleford.
