Saskatoon police have made an arrest in the brutal assault of a local newspaper journalist.

Charles Elwood, 22, appeared in provincial court Thursday afternoon charged with aggravated assault.

The victim is StarPhoenix columnist Bob Florence, who was found lying injured on the street in the Mayfair area on the west side of the city just after midnight on Feb. 27.

Florence, who has written sports for the paper for many years in addition to his column, had been walking home when he was attacked.

He spent weeks in hospital recovering from head injuries.

Police said they received numerous tips through the Crime Stoppers phone tip line. They arrested Elwood at his home in the city Wednesday night.

Police noted that Elwood  is a former offender who had been on parole.

On Thursday in court it was ordered that Elwood be kept in custody until a bail hearing, which was set for Monday.
