It happened just west of Fleet Street near the intersection with Highway 46 — also known as McDonald Street.
A traffic reconstructionist was at the scene shortly after the crash happened and reporters were being kept well back from the fog-shrouded intersection.
Later, police said the man in the car, a Ford Fusion, may have lost control of the vehicle and ended up in the opposite lane of traffic, facing the wrong way.
It was then struck by a west-bound Ford truck.
The driver of the truck was not injured.
The man in the car died at the scene. No name was released.
Traffic in the area was expected to return to normal before the end of the day.
