A huge tire plant that had been at the centre of zoning dispute involving Regina and a neighbouring rural municipality will not be coming to the area, after all.

Last year, Kal Tire had planned to set up a plant on the western edge of the city, but the proposal ran into a bureaucratic tangle, with the City of Regina and the RM of Sherwood at odds over zoning and other matters.

Late in 2012, the provincial government intervened and it appeared the dispute had been smoothed over.

On Thursday, however, Economy Minister Bill Boyd, confirmed that Kal Tire will not expand to the Regina-area site. Instead, the company will expand an existing facility in Edmonton.

Boyd said it was a business decision.
