An inmate whom police describe as violent has escaped from a Saskatoon jail in a stolen SUV, RCMP said on Sunday.

Police said John Richard Robert Anderson, 28, ran away from the Saskatoon Correctional Centre at about 10:30 a.m. MT while he was taking out the garbage from a unit at the jail.

He was being housed in a low-security unit while being held on property-related charges, corrections officials said.

RCMP said Anderson escaped in a stolen 2000 Chevrolet Blazer that is brown in colour. The licence plate is 429 HHA, police said.

RCMP said Anderson is described as violent and is not to be approached.

Anderson is five feet, five inches tall and weighs 154 pounds. He has a medium build with blue eyes and brown hair.

RCMP said he has a number of distinguishing marks on him, including:

  • A nine-centimetre long scar on his right arm.
  • A dog bite on his left arm.
  • A tattoo of the word "Malachi" on his left arm.
