A grassfire outside Swift Current threatened a number of buildings in the community, including the local hospital, before it was finally brought under control early Thursday evening.

Around 8 p.m. CST people in the community told CBC News that the fire was under control and crews were able to smother the flames within about 100 metres of a construction site for a new school and a nearby farm house.

The fire broke out just north of the city, in what appears to be a field of stubble.

In addition to the new school and home, a hospital and shopping mall were also in the path of the flames.

Buses were stationed outside the hospital in case the facility needed to be evacuated.
