A 16-year-old girl has died after falling from a grain elevator in Indian Head, Sask., about 70 kilometres east of Regina.

RCMP said the girl died of her injuries after falling 23 metres from the elevator around 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The girl apparently climbed to the top of the grain elevator with a friend but fell as she was climbing back down.

The friend called police, but by the time emergency crews arrived, the girl was unconscious.

Police said it was not uncommon for people to climb the elevator in the town.

The girl's name is not being released at the request of her family, but it is believed she was visiting from Regina.

The incident is being investigated.
