Adrian Charles to stand trial on handgun charge

Former Saskatoon Hilltops star Adrian Charles is back in court for retrial on handgun charge.

A former star running back with the Saskatoon Hilltops and University of Regina Rams is being ordered to appear in a Saskatoon court.

Adrian Charles was supposed to stand trial in Saskatoon today for allegedly carrying a loaded handgun with a filed-off serial number.

But he didn't show up. Instead, court heard that he had fired his lawyer.

His new lawyer applied for a one-day adjournment. The judge granted it, but also ordered that Charles show up Friday morning in person.

It's the latest chapter in a legal saga that dates back to 2008. Charles was charged in connection with a gang-related shooting in Pickering, Ont.

Those charges were stayed in 2009.

RCMP laid the handgun charge when officers allegedly found a loaded handgun under a floor mat in the BMW he was driving. But Charles was acquitted at trial when a provincial court excluded the evidence against him.

In 2012, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal ordered a new trial.
