Eye surgeons highest paid doctors under Sask. health billings

Eye surgeons were the highest paid doctors in the province, based on billings to Saskatchewan's Medical Services Plan in 2013-14.

According to a report from the Ministry of Health, the province's highest paid doctor, an ophthalmologist, was paid $2.28 million last year. The average for that specialty was $1.02 million.

The report points out that the listed payments to physicians are gross amounts and doctors must pay their own overhead, which can be very high in some specialties.

"The [Medical Services Plan] payments should not be taken to represent total professional income," the report added, in a footnote, because physicians may also receive payments from other sources for services not covered by the billing plan.

A general practice doctor was paid, on average, $281,000 the report said.

There were 860 active general practice doctors in Saskatchewan last year and another 724 active specialists.

Specialists, including eye surgeons and those in such fields as cardiology and neurology, were paid an average of $427,000.

The average payment, for all active physicians, was $348,000.

The report included a table comparing average payments over six years, from 2008-09 through 2013-14, and said the average pay, for all physicians, had increased by 2.44 per cent over that time span.
