Driver, students OK after school bus skids into ditch, topples
7 youngsters were on the school bus
No one was hurt after a school bus with seven youngsters on board hit an icy patch of road, slid into a ditch and fell over on its side, RCMP say.
The bus, which was moving youngsters from the Sun West School Division, was on a rural road about 10 kilometres north of Biggar, Sask., when the accident happened, around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday. The students were on their way to school.
RCMP said the road was extremely icy and the driver lost control and slid into a ditch. The bus then rolled onto its side.
School officials contacted parents of the youngsters to let them know what happened. The officials also made arrangements for another bus to pick up the children and take them to their schools.
RCMP said the bus was travelling well below the speed limit and the road conditions were to blame for the accident.
Because of the icy roads, and strong winds, school officials were suspending buses in the Biggar and Landis area for the rest of the day Wednesday. A return to normal operations was expected for Thursday.
