Police in Saskatoon say they have taken into custody a convicted murderer who escaped from the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert Wednesday.

Kevin Michael Sheets, 47, was noticed missing following an inmate check by corrections officers Wednesday night.

On Thursday, at 3 p.m. CST, Saskatoon police said there were called to a place on the 200 block of 20th Street East about a man fitting the description of the escapee.

The block includes a mix of businesses, including a restaurants and retail stores although police did not identify the business where the man was seen.

They said the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Sheets is serving a life sentence for 2nd-degree murder and had been in the minimum security wing .

After searching the area, corrections officers couldn't find him so they contacted the RCMP.

An investigation is underway to determine how Sheets escaped.
