A 53-year-old man died in an industrial accident after working on a manure pit at a dairy farm south of Rosthern, Sask.

Rosthern RCMP said they received a call around 6:20 p.m. CT Monday about an incident at a farm eight kilometres south of the town.

According to police, a contractor from Saskatoon was inside a five-metre-deep tank performing work on the system. Police said it appeared there was a problem with the pump.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Norm Flemming said he's not sure if the seal on the pump broke or there was some other problem.

"Apparently, he had a cable that was attached to him so that they were able to retrieve him," Flemming said. "But the situation was … when they attempted to pull him up through there, the cable became disconnected."

Late on Monday, police said emergency personnel were on the scene to recover the body.

The RCMP investigation is continuing and more details of the incident should be available Tuesday, Flemming said.

The 53-year-old worker's name has not been released.

Rosthern is about 70 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
