Saskatchewan's next provincial park will be named after the great blue heron, the government says.

The Saskatchewan legislature has approved the creation of the 35th provincial park, which will be called Great Blue Heron Provincial Park.

The big aquatic bird is a common sight around the area, north of Prince Albert and close to Anglin and Emma Lakes.

The park will cover an area of 11,168 hectares and contain almost 300 campsites.

The area will officially become a provincial park later this year.

It will be the first provincial park to be established in two decades.
