A Meadow Lake man, who is the commanding officer of the local air cadets, has been charged with sexual assault and other sex offences.

John Rollins Hardwick, 50, appeared in court in the northwest Saskatchewan city on Monday and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Jan. 25.

Hardwick, who holds the rank of captain with the cadets, was charged on the weekend after the RCMP received a complaint of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred on Friday.

Hardwick is facing two counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference and two counts of sexual exploitation. The complainant is a female under the age of 18.

Police did not say whether or not she had any connection to the air cadets.

There are about 20 members of 520 Meadow Lake squadron of the Air Cadets League, all between the ages of 12 and 18.

Officials with the Air Cadets League told CBC News that Hardwick has been suspended.

A parent involved with the Meadow Lake air cadets said Hardwick recently cancelled some upcoming events.

The Meadow Lake RCMP said they are trying to determine if there are any other potential victims.

Meadow Lake, a city of about 5,000, is 300 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.
