A 16-year-old boy has died while in remand in Prince Albert.

The province said staff at Prince Albert Youth Residence noticed the boy was in medical distress on Wednesday. They said the teen was taken to hospital right away.

He died at 1:15 p.m. CST on Thursday.

No further details about what happened have been made public.

A government news release said the police, coroner's office and Saskatchewan children's advocate have been notified. The province's Ministry of Justice will also conduct its own internal investigation into the boy's death.
