A preliminary hearing has begun in the aggravated assault case of Roughriders Dwight Anderson and Taj Smith.

Anderson and Smith both appeared in Regina provincial court Wednesday morning.

They were charged after a man was beaten outside a Regina bar last summer.

The details of the hearing, which is set for two days, are protected by a publication ban.

A preliminary hearing is held to determine if the Crown's evidence is strong enough to take to trial.

If that's what the judge decides, Smith and Anderson have opted to be tried by judge and jury.
