A man has been charged with trying to smuggle guns into Canada at the North Portal, Sask., border crossing.

The man, 49, is in custody and faces two counts under the Customs Act, the Canadian Border Services Agency said Tuesday. The agency did not identify the man's nationality.

The agency said on Oct. 31, officers seized five handguns, an AR-15 assault rifle, and seven overcapacity magazines from a traveller.

He's scheduled to appear in Regina provincial court on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
