2 charged after suspicious fire at Waterhen Lake
Building was to house RCMP
Two teenage boys have been charged in connection with a suspicious fire at the Waterhen Lake First Nation in Saskatchewan, RCMP said.
On Sept. 29 at about 11 p.m., police received a call that an under-construction, band-owned building that was to be leased to the RCMP was on fire.
Meadow Lake RCMP said they arrested the two youth Sunday after an investigation assisted by members of the North Battleford Provincial GIS unit.
A 16-year-old from the Big Island Lake First Nation and a 14-year-old from Waterhen Lake First Nation are charged with arson.
They are scheduled to separately appear in Provincial Court on Oct. 11 and Nov. 21, respectively.
The investigation is continuing with a follow-up of any other possible witnesses, police said.
Leaders with the police force and the First Nation met Tuesday morning. Police say the First Nation, which is about 350 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon, still intends to construct housing for the RCMP, which will allow officers to live and police within the community.
