Riding profile

riding map

The electoral division of Chomedey is a multicultural, urban riding containing part of the Montreal suburb of Laval. It sits on the north side of the the Rivière des Prairies waterway, directly across from Montreal Island. The riding was created in 1981 and lost some of its northwestern area in the 2011 boundary revisions.

Political history

The district has been Liberal since its outset. It was most famously the riding of former provincial environment minister turned federal NDP and Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair, who won by a massive margin in his last race here in 2003. Before that, Lise Bacon held the riding while she was, variously, deputy premier, culture minister, human resources minister, environment minister and energy minister, among other portfolios. She was appointed to the Senate in 1994 and served there until 2009.
