Riding profile

riding map

The triangular-shaped, mixed suburban and rural riding encompasses a strech of the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River just north and east of Quebec City. The electoral district was first established in the 1850s, was eliminated before the 1912 election and then was revived in 1945. As of the 2011 riding redistribution, it now includes Île d'Orléans, the farming island in the St. Lawrence River east of Quebec City, and some municipal areas just east of the provincial capital. It also added the second part of its name in 2011 — previously it was just called "Charlevoix."

Political history

The district was loyally Liberal from 1962 to 1989, then switched allegiances to the Parti Québécois in the 1994 election and hasn't turned back. It's the riding of PQ Leader Pauline Marois.
