Riding profile
Bertrand is split between Quebec's Lanaudière and Laurentides (Laurentians) regions and runs north of Montreal straddling the Laurentians Highway. The riding includes the cottage-country communities of Saint-Sauveur, Piedmont, Saint-Adèle, Val-David, Val-Morin and Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts.
The riding was created in 1992, and while it shares a name with a district that existed before then, the commonalities end there, since they aren't even in the same region. In the 2011 riding redistribution, it lost territory at its southern and eastern flanks to the riding of Rousseau, and gained part of the district of Prévost.
Political history
The district was engrossed in electoral controversy from its outset. Liberal Robert Thérien defeated the Parti Québécois's Monique Simard by 146 votes in 1994, but the results were contested. Simard said Liberals with primary residences in Montreal voted here because their votes were needed more than in Montreal. Thérein tried unsuccessfully to get the case stopped and he appealed each decision against him. On Feb. 21, 1996, he was found guilty of having voted illegally and inciting others to do so. The election was declared void, and the decision was upheld on appeal. The Liberals won the ensuing byelection but lost in every subsequent election.
