The YMCA of P.E.I. is closing its Early Years Centre and all its children's programs in Summerside as of Dec. 20.

Ron Perry, president of the organization's board of directors, said the decision was made because of declining enrolment and increased expenses.

Close to 25 children go to the Early Years Centre, from infants to preschoolers, and there are 12 full-time day care staff members. The YMCA also operates pre and after school programs, along with summer day camps, including some specifically for special needs children.

Perry said the organization is looking for ways to use the Summerside facilities either by leasing it, or by offering new programs in the future.
