Woman struck and killed by vehicle in whiteout
Blizzard-like conditions on Route 7 where 60-year-old woman was struck
A 60-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle during whiteout conditions in North Milton Friday morning, say RCMP.
Queens District RCMP and emergency responders were called to a vehicle-pedestrian collision on Route 7 in North Milton at about 6:30 am.
A van travelling south on Route 7 struck and killed a female resident of North Milton who was crossing the highway.
"We believe at this point she was crossing the highway to pick up the paper, which was on the other side of the highway," said Sgt. Andrew Blackadar.
"The individual driving the van was driving below highway speeds when the collision occurred. The conditions were very poor at the time, visibility was very poor. At the last minute he attempted to swerve to avoid the individual who was in the middle of the highway and ended up striking the female on the highway."
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Speed and alcohol were not factors in this collision.
The investigation continues.
The name of the deceased is not being released until relatives in western Canada are notified.
