Despite an intense winter storm yesterday, volunteer drivers on P.E.I. succeeded in getting cancer patients to their treatment appointments.

Transportation Minister Robert Vessey is publicly thanking the drivers, describing them as heroes for having to cope with harsh weather conditions.

Since the volunteer program started last May, about 80 drivers have completed more than 600 trips to chemotherapy and radiation therapy clinics.

The drivers are provided with free gas cards donated by groups and individuals.
