A new winter fishery kicked off this weekend on P.E.I. and organizers say it's proving to be quite popular.

More than 100 people took to the ice in Alberton and Stratford.

In November the P.E.I. Bait Fishers Association released 600 trout into Kelly's Pond, enough to sustain four weekends of winter fishing.

"It’s just something to get people out — do something —  and fishing is better than playing Xbox for kids,” said organizer Kevin Rogerson.

For $5, people are allowed to catch three trout.

Similar events are planned in Alberton and Wellington over the next few weeks.
