P.E.I.'s watershed groups will see a big boost in funding from the government as soon as the budget is tabled, says Environment Minister Robert Mitchell.

Environment critic Brad Trivers questioned Mitchell in the legislature last week, asking him to follow through on an election promise.

"In response to campaigning over the past few months, our government has established that their funding is not enough, we understand that, and we've committed an extra $250,000 to that envelope of funding for the watersheds on Prince Edward Island," said Mitchell.

There are currently 31 watershed groups on P.E.I.

They received about $800,000 from the province in the past year.

Mitchell says those groups will see a boost of $180,000 in this fiscal year, and $70,000 the year after.
