Top-quality cattle fetch 6 digits at P.E.I. auction
The top cow of the day went for $180,000 at Charlottetown auction
Bidding for P.E.I.’s best Holstein’s hit six figures as top-quality dairy cattle went up for sale at an auction at Eastside Lewisdale in Charlottetown.
The top cow of the day went for $180,000. The auction was live-streamed to bidders in a couple dozen countries.
Organizer Bloyce Thompson, owner of Eastide Farm, says the auction brings together a variety of cows.
“There's something here for everyone,” he said. “There's the high-end genetics that will bring that $60- to $70,000 range."
More than 100 of the cattle at the sale share the genes of a famed Holstein named Missy.
She sold for $1 million a few years ago at the Royal Winter Fair.
"Canadians and P.E.I. in general, we're noted for our good type cattle, our good confirmation,” said Barry Uyterlande, a dairy and chicken farmer. “Have been for years and that's why we're having a quality sale like we have today."
