Parking problems at the Summerside Tax Centre on P.E.I. have workers and others in the area concerned about safety.

During peak tax season, the centre employs nearly 1,000 people, but there are only about 500 parking spots.

There is not enough space in the Summerside Tax Centre's parking lot during peak season, says Emmanuel Costain. (CBC)

"Now you're seeing on average, during peak times, there's an average of 130 to 150 cars parked on the road," said union representative Emmanuel Costain.

While more jobs is good news, said Costain, the centre's parking hasn't been able to keep up with the pace.

"Once upon a time, 15 years ago, there was never an issue with parking," he said.

Marlene Bulger runs the Summerside Shoe Clinic, just across the street from the tax centre, and watches people cross Pope Road all the time.

"When they come out of the tax centre, especially in the winter and they're parked on this side of the street and they have to cross over, it's very dangerous," said Bulger.

The tax centre has created a parking committee to solve this problem, and is encouraging staff to car pool.

Trius Tours is considering a direct shuttle service that would begin at Credit Union Place.
