A man was seriously injured when he was struck by a provincial Department of Transportation snowblower in Summerside, P.E.I., on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The incident occurred at about 2:50 p.m. local time on Read Drive just north of the lights at Reads Corner, East Prince RCMP said in a release.

Witnesses provided first aid to the victim as they waited for an ambulance.

The injured man, whose name wasn't disclosed, was transported to the Prince County Hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries, police said.

The victim, who police say is expected to survive his injuries, is a 49-year-old resident and lives close to where the accident occurred, police said.

Police said the machine was not blowing snow at the time of the accident and was heading northwest on Read. The victim got out of a car on the southwest side of the highway and "proceeded across Read Drive into the path of the snowblower."

Police said they would like to interview the people who dropped the man off on Read. Anyone with information can contact the nearest RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
